Due to high barrier properties of the glass material, it is widely used for the packaging of pharmaceutical products across the world. Pharmaceutical glass tubing is used as a raw material to manufacture parental packaging products such as ampoules, vials, syringes, and cartridges. Borosilicate glass i.e. Type I glass is primarily used to manufacture pharmaceutical glass tubing. The supply base of pharmaceutical glass tubing market is consolidated in nature with the presence of only a few players in the developed as well as in developing economies. The market consolidation has created a pressure on packaging converters due to fewer options of pharmaceutical glass tubing suppliers. Packaging converters face the challenge of high cost due to low bargaining power on their side. However, the increasing demand for parental packaging products has gained significant attention from the investors and other established specialty glass manufacturing companies.
Newton Consulting Partners analysed three key players in the global pharmaceutical glass tubing market i.e. Schott AG, Nipro Pharma Packaging, and Corning Incorporated.
Schott AG is a Germany-based leading manufacturer of specialty glass and glass-ceramic products for a variety of end-use industries such as architecture, automotive, aviation, commercial cooling, pharmaceutical, consumer electronics, life sciences, etc. The company generated net annual sales of US$ 2.37 Billion in 2017. The company manufactures glass tubing and parental packaging containers for the pharmaceutical industry. With production facilities in Germany, India, and Brazil, it has a production capacity of approximately 1,40,000 tonnes of pharmaceutical glass tubing.
Nipro Pharma Packaging is a part of Nipro Corporation which along with its subsidiaries manufactures medical devices, pharmaceutical products, and pharmaceutical packaging products. The company is headquartered in Japan and currently employs more than 28,000 personnel. Nipro Corporation generated new annual sales of approximately US$ 3.6 billion in 2018. However, its pharmaceutical packaging business generated revenues of US$ 260 million in 2018. The company is focusing to launch high-quality products in countries such as China and India where demand is continuously increasing. Nipro Pharma Packaging has an annual production capacity of 90,000 tons of pharmaceutical glass tubing.
Corning Incorporated is a century-old company which is engaged in manufacturing of specialty glasses, ceramics, and other related materials through its strategically located facilities in Asia-Pacific, North America, and Europe. The company generated net annual sales of US$ 10.5 billion in 2017. In 2015, Corning acquired Gerresheimer’s pharmaceutical glass tubing business for total consideration of approximately US$ 220 million. The company realised a net increase of US$ 88 million in its revenues in 2017 from its other business segments. Increases in revenues of this segment is primarily driven by its pharmaceutical glass tubing business.
It should be noted that globally over 4/5th of the glass vials and ampoules are manufactured from borosilicate glass material. The demand for borosilicate glass tubing is increasing at a faster pace due to its inert properties which other conventional materials do not offer. The pharmaceutical parental packaging market is dominated by Gerresheimer, Schott, Nipro, and Stevanato Group owing to their highly automated and integrated production facilities strategically located across the globe. However, some of the Chinese companies are also gaining strong foothold in the pharmaceutical glass tubing market owing to their capability to supply products at low cost with average quality. Chinese companies are expected to expand their market presence through outsourcing high-quality pharmaceutical glass tubing manufacturing machinery from European suppliers and capacity additions in the coming years.
